Grabbed inside the

Left leg, held on, stood

Up, pulled leg to chest, tripped.


From tie-up, grabbed both

Knees from behind, aimed

Forehead at chest, drove,

Slid hands to ankles,

Tackled for mat fall.



Counted

Down hours 

At work each day,

Hours before work,

Days until a day off.


A & P shopping

Bags twisted, cutting

Into his hands on 

14th Street crosstown

Bus, Avenue walk.



He had

To go back

To sleep, fever,

No appetite, felt

Completely exhausted.


Stark naked, he slumped 

On exam table,

Lay back, inspected,

On hands and knees while

Finger inserted.
