Paul stood at entrance,

Breathed in warm air, sweat,

Saw black and red mats

Which padded the walls.

Varsity wrestlers,

Paired off, pounded through

Fast paced maneuvers,

Mats taped together.

Wrestlers grunted, limbs

Dropped with thuds, coach watched,

Called out performance,

Blew whistle, closed door.

Boys received passes

During study hall

To nurse's office,

Wrestling physical.

Urine sample, lined

Up, adjacent door

Opened, boy walked out,

Zipped pants, buckled belt.

Each entered stale smell,

Doctor gestured, shirt

Lifted, chest listened

To, briefs dropped, coughed twice.

Phys Ed soccer class

Led by football coach

Passed players in the

Varsity lockers.

Steam rolled across from

Showers, boys seated

On benches took off

Muddy uniforms.

Coach paused class to chat

With player who stood,

Face out in doorway,

Toweling off his hair.

Todd surrendered his

Pool access ticket

To attendant near

Used suits piled for rent.

Glanced at men taking

Showers, made his way

Past men changing their

Street wear for beachwear.

Thought about lifeguard

Spotted on guard chair,

His Speedo popped out

When viewed from the side.
